Children are encouraged to be interested in their immediate surroundings (home and school) and to extend this interest to people and places in the local environment, which is supported by visits in and around Whitehaven and other parts of the county e.g. Walby Farm Park (Carlisle).
Children have the opportunity to study two contrasting localities. Children are given the opportunity to develop skills which enable them to describe what places are like, identify where places are, compare different places and recognise how places are linked to other places in the world.
The children are introduced to history by looking at people’s lives and life styles. They are given many opportunities to develop their awareness of the past and to develop a chronological understanding. Children are given the opportunity to develop skills which enable them to use a variety of sources of information to help them to investigate the past e.g. talking about and handling photographs and artifacts, use of the internet, CD Roms, Information books and visiting museums and galleries. They also learn a great deal from visitors to school.
